Choosing a Data Science Bootcamp program questions to ask things to look for and look out for

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to speak with a lot of prospective Data Science bootcamp students sharing my pre and post bootcamp experiences and helping them put in context some of the major factors they need to consider before deciding to attend a Data Science bootcamp. This post is a summary to shed some light on some of those thoughts Ive shared privately with prospective Data Science bootcamp students, things they should look for and things to look out for.

The list below may not be encompassing as each prospective Data Science bootcamp student is unique in their own way and what they hope to get out of the experience.

Do keep in mind this list was put together for those considering full time Data Science bootcamp programs.

Without further ado.. here we go

Background : Data Science is a hybrid role. Having a background with the right mix of Quantitative skills, Programming, Statistics, Math, Business Acumen, Databases, and Machine Learning would probably work in your favor. 6 or 12 weeks is a very short time to learn these things from scratch.

Also, having a good background improves your chances of getting into one of these Data Science bootcamp programs. I hear theyre getting quite competitive these days.

Cohort Makeup : At most bootcamps part of your learning comes from lectures and interactions with the instructors, TAs and guest speakers. The other half comes from working and collaborating with your cohort mates on the course materials and projects. It is important that a cohort have people with a diversity of past educational / professional experiences. Your cohort mates will become your friends, co-workers, collaborators and maybe even co-founders.

Placement Rate : This is a really interesting one. A bootcamp with 100% placement may not always be the best choice. Ive heard some bootcamps drop students who they feel may not be able to find a job and dont include them in the numbers. Prospective students have to dig deeper on the placement rates and ask the following questions:

Percent of students placed in actual Data Science roles
Percent of students placed within one month or three months of finishing the program
Percent of students placed through Hiring Day
Percent of students placed through an introduction that the bootcamp made
Percent of students actually looking for a job post bootcamp
Median Salaries for students placed
Salary Range for students placed

Going through a Data Science bootcamp is definitely not a silver bullet. There are a lot of people that go through these programs and still end up with non-optimal outcomes.

Hiring Day : As as far I know, most of the Data Science bootcamps have a hiring day event where students get an opportunity to present their capstone projects to potential employers and "speed date" with those employers. Some Data Science bootcamps have exclusive hiring events with employers in their Hiring Network or guest lectures and presentation from companies that might be looking for talent.

Cost : This could be major factor in deciding to attend a bootcamp. Data Science Bootcamp program tuition range from free to $16,000. There might also be other costs like room and board, incidentals, relocation and lost wages. What this mix looks like will be different for each prospective student.

One way to look at cost is that this a short term investment for a chance to break into a new career.

A good amount of the material you need to learn to become a Data Scientist is free and available on the internet. Some students that get admitted to these Data Science bootcamps could have chosen to lock themselves in a room for 6 months and study all this material and then emerge having learned all the material / skills required to be able to land a job.

This is entirely possible but you lose out on all the intangibles you get from attending an in-person Data Science bootcamp - mentoring from instructors/guest lecturers, structured learning, motivation, positive reinforcement, collaborating with cohort mates, networking, getting a different view on approaching and solving problems, etc. What these intangibles are worth / could be worth down the line should be carefully evaluated and added to the cost equation.

Interview Prep / Soft skills / Business Acumen : It is important to know how much time the Data Science bootcamp spends on soft skills, interviewing and white boarding. Most job interviews you go to may require you to work through programming problems, communicate the results of an analysis you may have worked on to a technical / non-technical audience, working through a modeling case study, etc.

These are skills you get better at with practice. Some Data Science bootcamps weave this in as part of the curriculum so the students are more comfortable with this by the end of the program whereas others may reserve time towards the last few weeks of the program to work on these.

Curriculum : It is difficult to learn everything you need to become a Data Scientist in 6 or 12 weeks. You want to look for a program that will give you enough breadth and depth and a good enough foundation to start and build a career in this field.

Location : Majority of the Data Science bootcamp programs are based either in the Bay Area, New York or scattered through Europe (London, Dublin, Berlin) and most graduates end up working in those places. Ive seen some setup shop in other tech metros like Boston, Seattle and Denver.

Contact Alumni : There is a lot of information to be gleaned from talking to past students of Data Science bootcamp programs youre considering. Youll get a raw and unfiltered view of their experience.

Projects : You should look for programs that will enable you work on variety of projects with small, medium and large data. This way youll have a broad range of experiences and a portfolio of interesting projects or analysis to talk about once you hit the interview trail.

In-Person vs Online : It is very difficult to replicate the collaborative environment of a full time in-person Data Science bootcamp in an online setting. Assuming there are no other extenuating factors, choosing a full time in-person bootcamp should be the preferred option.

Established vs New Programs : This is actually one of the most frequent questions I get. Prospective students are usually torn between going with a more established program which has gone through several cohorts and has established a track record versus a new and upcoming program which may have gone through one or two cohorts or is just getting started.

Prospective students need to evaluate Data Science bootcamp programs theyre considering on their merits and the factors that are actually most important to the student. There are advantages going with either a more established program or a much newer one. The prospective student needs to do some introspecting after which the path they have to take becomes very obvious.

To keep things in context, none of these Data Science bootcamp programs existed 3 years ago.

Alumni Network : Generally, this is a perk. Going to a bootcamp with a strong alum network could sometimes make the difference. You could be exposed to opportunities and / or jobs that you may not otherwise have access to. Having access to an active and collaborative alum network is worth its weight in gold (or whatever precious metal you prefer)

Outcomes : Students going through Data Science bootcamps usually have different goals. For most, its probably getting a Data Science / Machine Learning focused job. For others it could be gaining a skill set thatll enable them work on their own ideas, break into the industry and / or move up the ladder in their current job. Whatever those goals are, going with a bootcamp that can work with you or even personalize some of the curriculum to ensure youre getting the best value for your time and money would be most ideal.

As far as customizing the curriculum, some of the bootcamps with smaller cohorts will have a much easier time doing this.

These are outcome based programs so you should go with a program thatll give you the best chance of finishing with a positive outcome whatever that may be.

As with programming bootcamps, Data Science bootcamps are now becoming commoditized. Some of these Data Science bootcamps consider themselves Post Doctoral training programs while others want to own a different segment of the market.

If youre considering a Data Science bootcamp program , do go through this list and then pick the program that is the best fit and will deliver the highest delta / value for you.

Christmas 1985. I had shown brother David the "chin

face" video I recorded at friend Jims bachelor party (Id painted a goofy face on Jims chin and he laid on his back for a video camera to capture him lip-synching Beethovens Joyful Joyful). David, an illustrator, was ready to take it up a notch. He painted faces on several of our chins, and I did his chin and Moms. We sat comfortably upright in front of a video camera mounted upside down, hooked to TV so we could see what expressions we were creating. (Poor Dad: we assigned him some funky Michael Jackson song he didnt know. Made us all laugh.)

Enquanto os jogos anteriores da s�rie focalizavam apenas na classifica��o dos corredores de acordo com tempo gasto para se completar um trajeto, DiRT oferece novos modos de jogo, como competi��es de rally raid, rally cross, crossover, hill climb e o Campeonato de Corrida Off-Road.

Como cada modalidade deve ocorrer em um tipo de pista, a desenvolvedora Codemasters incluiu 55 trajetos diferentes, alguns baseados em locais reais e outros representando pistas atuais de competi��es de rally. Entre esses trajetos est�o o Chula Vista Raceway, da Calif�rnia, o Croft Circuit, da Inglaterra, o Circuit de Ducs, da Fran�a, e o Pikes Peak, do Colorado.

Choosing a Gaming Video Card for your PC

Choosing the right gaming video card for your needs can be a tough decision for many. There are so many different graphics cards out there, all with different specs and features, its hard to know what is best for you.Your gaming video card will be responsible for producing the dazzling 3D graphics and effects seen in the latest computer games. A better graphics card makes for a better 3D gaming experience, so gamers should choose the best video card they can afford.

AGP or PCI Express
There are two ways to connect your graphics card to your motherboard, via an AGP or PCI Express slot.

Generally, a motherboard will only support one these slot types. So you need to make sure which it is before looking for a video card.

AGP has been the norm for a long time now, but it is old technology.

PCI Express is the new kid on the block, and it�s only a matter of time until it completely takes over from AGP. The benefit of PCI Express is that it can handle a greater data throughput than an AGP slot.

PCI Express offers performance of up to 4X faster than the fastest AGP slot. It�s relatively new technology, and it isn�t being used to its full potential yet. Although, we predict that games released in the next 1-2 years will make full use of PCI Express technology.

Another advantage of PCI Express is you can connect more than one video card to your computer. This is impossible with AGP, a motherboard can only ever have one AGP slot.

If you�re simply upgrading your gaming computer with a new video card, you should check whether your motherboard supports AGP or PCI Express, and then choose a card accordingly. Don�t worry if your motherboard has an AGP slot. Even though it�s not the latest technology, AGP is going to stay around for a long time. Many of the best video cards come in AGP versions.

On the other hand, if you�re building a new system from scratch, you have the choice. We recommend choosing a gaming video card with PCI Express, and a motherboard that supports it. As we said before, the games of the future will soon harness the power of this new technology, leaving AGP in the dark. So by choosing PCI Express now, it will save you the upgrade later when AGP becomes obsolete.

Also, don�t confuse PCI Express with PCI. A long time ago you would connect your graphics card through a PCI slot on your motherboard. This is very slow compared to todays standards, and is completely outdated.

ATI or nVidia
Very much like the CPU market, there are two companies that dominate the world of gaming video cards, ATI and nVidia. They make the best video card chips in the world. ATI is responsible for the Radeon series, while nVidia is behind the GeForce line of cards.

Although ATI and nVidia make the graphics card technology you see in all the latest cards, they don�t actually sell them themselves. They license their best video card chips to companies such as GeCube, Saphire, Asus, and ABit (just to name a few) who then sell their own variants on the original technology.

Rendering Features
The speed and efficiency of the GPU isn�t the only thing that counts. The latest 3D games and software make use of advanced 3D rendering effects such as anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, bump-mapping, pixel shaders and much more.

If you run a game that was written with such features in mind, and your graphics card doesn�t support them, you will experience a significant performance loss, or at worst the game won�t run at all. The best gaming video cards on the market try to keep up with all the latest 3D rendering techniques in the software world.

Other Functions
Video cards provide other functions apart from rendering 3D graphics. For example, you can have high-definition output, output to a TV screen, or to multiple monitors. If you want such features, be sure to check if they�re listed on the box.

* DVI: This is a higher-definition output used with newer monitors and some high-end TVs. Connecting to your monitor via DVI offers better image quality than the standard VGA connection. If you want to take advantage of DVI, buy a graphics card and monitor that supports it.

* TV-Out: If you wish to display the output of your video card onto a TV screen, you will need a graphics card that supports TV-Out. Many of the best video cards on the market have this feature, aswell as budget-line cards. You connect your graphics card to a TV using an S-video connection. If you have an older TV with an RCA input instead of S-video, you will need an S-video to RCA adaptor.

* Dual Monitor Support: If you want to split your video output across two monitors, you will need dual monitor support on your graphics card. This feature is useful for developers, engineers, designers, and multi-taskers who wish to view many different windows on their desktop at once. Usually, one output will be VGA and the other DVI.

Classic Google and embedding New Google posts on Blogger and HTML pages

Users of Google+ have encountered gentle reminders to switch to the new Google+ UI for months now. The earlier version, referred to as classic Google+, will eventually "go away". On the upside, the new Google+ is simpler and more attractive, which was Googles response to criticisms from mainstream users who found it "too complicated". On the downside, Google+ loses some functionality when it comes to sharing and interactivity. With the new Google+, posts are generally encouraged to stay within the Google+ ecosystem.

Post options in the old Google+ has an Embed post option.

Google+ classic has options to Link to post and Embed post. Link to post provides a hyperlink directly to Google+, while Embed post provides a few lines for copying to HTML markup.

The new Google+, on the other hand, has options to share directly to Twitter, Facebook, and another Google+ account. When using these Share options, a post is directly embedded to Twitter or Facebook along with a corresponding preview or widget. The new Google+ also has the Copy link option to get a Google+ link, which provides the same function as the Link to post in the classic Google+ UI. Unfortunately, the option to get the markup for embedding Google+ is no longer available.

As of this writing, a simple workaround to embedding Google+ posts is to reuse the original markup from classic Google+. Users just need to replace the href value with the Google+ post you want to embed.

To embed a new Google+ post to a Blogger post:

1. In the new Google+, click the Share button, and then click Copy link.

2. In Blogger editor, click HTML.

3. Copy and paste the following lines in the area where you want the Google+ widget to appear:
