Co Creating with Creative Commons
Co Creating with Creative Commons
In a few hours, Ill be up early in order to make the drive to York University. Once there, Ill be taking part in the ABEL Summer Institute, where Ill be leading a workshop on Creative Commons. In keeping with the theme of ASI2010: "Creating the Future Now", Ill be working with participants in my session to co-create a Creative Commons Field Guide. If all goes according to plan, our collegial effort will highlight a number of innovative ways that teachers and students can leverage Creative Commons in the classroom.
Creative Commons is an excellent vehicle to model academic integrity, and to provide learners with raw content for their multimedia creations. Ill be using the slidedeck below to provide a rationale for using and attributing Creative Commons works, and to highlight a wide range of CC licensed exemplars.
How will we Create the Future?
During the latter half of my workshop, well be producing and publishing a professional development resource. If youd like to contribute to this e-book, I invite you to follow the steps below to share your idea.
Step #1: In 25 to 50 words, teachers will be asked identify a strategy, project, or idea for leveraging Creative Commons.
Step #2: Teachers will be challenged to identify a CC licensed photo that can be used to illustrate their idea. Im encouraging the use of images by Stuck in Customs so that our resource will have a consistent look and feel.
Step #3: Participants will contribute their ideas.
During the week following the ABEL Summer Institute, Ill be condensing the ideas into a common slidedeck which will be made available as a downloadable e-book from my Slideshare account.
Christmas Comes Early HFS HFS Mounting
Christmas Comes Early HFS HFS Mounting
| This is my first attempt at using asciidoc to create a more legible document for the reader. My thanks go out to Dr. Michael Cohen at Google for pointing out the formatting tool. |
The Ghost of HFS Past
It is no great revelation that Apple favors the HFS/HFS+ file systems. But, when I started my adventures in Linux-based forensics, my chief forensics tool, The Sleuthkit, did not support HFS file systems. The solution was to mount the file systems read-only and examine the allocated files with standard Linux tools and applications. Even when The Sleuthkit added HFS support, it was still useful to mount the partition, especially when it came to examining media files.
Microsoft Windows Windows users have been doing pretty much the same using tools like HFSExplorer. |
The process in Linux was pretty straight forward:
Image the device to be examined.
Read the partition table to identify the byte-offset to the HFS partition in the image.
Use the mount command with the byte-offset to mount the partition.
For example
# mmls macbookpro320.dd -a |
The mount command attaches file systems on storage devices to the GNU Linux file tree. Conversely, the umount (not ‘unmount’ as you might expect) command detaches the device file system from the GNU Linux file system. The mount command above worked with the macbookpro320.dd disk image because of the loop option.
Loop Device
In Unix-like operating systems, a loop device, vnd (vnode disk), or lofi (loopback file interface) is a pseudo-device that makes a file accessible as a block device.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loop_device
— Wikipedia
The Ghost of HFS Present
But, somewhere around the 2.6.34 Linux kernel, the mount command stopped working with HFS loop devices in the manner demonstrated above. The mount command can still be used to mount a partition addressed block device, but not addressed by image by offset like the illustration above.
By Partition Block Device File (verbose mode for illustration)
# blkid |
As you can see, the mount command works as expected when the partition is addressed by the special block device file. But, when the partition is addressed by byte-offset from the raw device or disk image, it fails:
By Byte-Offset (block device shown)
# mmls -a /dev/sdd |
| This bug only applies to HFS formatted partitions. Other common file systems—FAT, NFTS, EXT2/3/4—do not seem to be affected. |
The Ghost of HFS Future
The work around for storage devices is obvious: point mount at the partition’s block device file. But in forensics, we work with disk images to avoid making changes to the original storage medium. How do we address HFS partitions in disk images if we can’t address them by offset?
Enter kpartx. The kpartx command reads partition tables and maps partitions to device files. It works on devices and disk images. This means we can map HFS partitions in a disk image to a special block device file and mount those partitions by addressing that block device file as if it were part of an attached device!
kpartx
# kpartx |
To demonstrate its use, we will use a raw (dd) image from a MacBook Pro. Other disk image formats will work too, so long as they can be exposed to GNU Linux as raw devices (think xmount).
Image Information
# img_stat macbookpro320.dd |
We can read the partitions in the disk image with kpartx.
kpartx: Detected Partitions
# kpartx -l macbookpro320.dd |
The GUID Partition Table kpartx has a option to force a GUID partition table, which the MacBook uses, but as demonstrated, it wasn’t necessary in this case. |
All that remains to do is to map the partitions so that we can mount them. We can use the -r option to create read-only devices.
kpartx: Mapping Partitions
# kpartx -av macbookpro320.dd |
Now, mounting is as simple as pointing at the new block device files, which are found in the /dev/mapper directory.
Mounting special HFS block devices
# mount -o ro -v /dev/mapper/loop1p2 /mnt/analysis |
After you have completed your analysis, unmount the partition and remove the special block devices.
Cleaning up
# umount -v /mnt/analysis/ |
Accessing Unallocated File System Space Unallocated space in HFS partitions is addressable through The Sleuthkit with the blkls tool. |
Now, go forth and conquer!

Chicken Invaders 3 Revenge of the Yolk
Chicken Invaders 3 Revenge of the Yolk
Chicken Invaders 3: Revenge of the Yolk comprises the main game together with Easter and Christmas editions. It is similar to the second version (with up to 4 player cooperative play). It has 120 waves, in 10 levels across 12 systems in the galaxy. There are 30 bonuses. Weapons have 11 power levels, and a secret 12th level, which can only be reached by acquiring an additional 10 powerups after the 10th level powerup (the 20th). There are also eight which are unlocked after repeatedly completing the game.
The plot has the hero heading to Space Burger, famished as usual, when a twinkling behind the sun was spotted. When the hero arrives at that twinkling, he comes upon a giant egg that may or may not my built out of the Mother Hen ship. This egg, known as the Yolk Star, pushed the player into a black hole after the player gets him angry. The player arrives at the other end of the galaxy and must battle his way back and destroy the Yolk Star before it destroys earth.

Classified Information Contained in We Meant Well Its a Slam Dunk Baby!
Days before Peter Van Burens book hit the bookstores, the Public Affairs shop of the State Department wrote to Peter Van Burens publishers requesting some redactions of "classified" information contained in the book under the guise of protecting U.S. national security interests. The publisher declined and the book is currently on sale without those redactions.
So far, the State Department had the good sense not/not to buy all copies of Mr. Van Burens book and make a bonfire out of them.
I have already read the book when I learned of the requested redactions. I was, of course, curious which parts of what I was reading was considered "classified" material. I can now tell you which parts of the book the State Department wanted redacted. Three small sections of the book were deemed too sensitive that if published could "harm U.S. national security interest."
Below are screen grabs from the State Department/PA letter to the publisher, and right below each is the passage from the book, We Meant Well, released last September 27. The requested redactions are in bold and highlighted in yellow:

Tall and lanky, he had worked in Afghanistan everyone of his generation had but also in Mogadishu and some places I wont even type the names of.

Actual passage from WMW, published on September 27:
The Agency was quiet in Iraq because, as I said, this wasnt their war. They had nailed their biggest coup early on, still said to be controlling most of the budget for Iraqi intelligence. To them, holding the money meant that they were running the Iraqis though, as we knew, spending money in Iraq did not always mean control and sometimes the project turned and ran you.
REQUESTED REDACTION #3
![]() |
| screen grab from State/PA letter to WMW publisher |
Actual passage in WMW, published on September 27:
Now, a cynic might point out that years had passed since wed nabbed Saddam and that we hanged him in 2006 about a mile from where we sat,but this wasnt the night for it and we all took a moment to marvel at the plates and ask the person next to us what, if the room could talk, he thought it might say. Had Saddam deflowered virgins here, planned the invasion of Kuwait, and maybe met with al Qaeda right at this table, who knew? It was, of course, equally possible that in this room Saddam had met his Agency handlers in 1983 to discuss the war against Iran or receive info from Don Rumsfeld about the new weapons he was getting from the United States to kill Persians and Kurds.
So there you go -- a total of some 30 words that, as theyve now been published, are obviously, clearly and irrevocably harmful to U.S. national security interest.
Mogadishu is a classified item, Afghanistan is not -- who knew?
The question is -- would this hold up in court?
Mr. Van Buren has posted in his blog a copy of the letter sent by Dana Shell Smith, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (PDAS) of the Bureau of Public Affairs to the book publisher, Macmillan. Below is a copy of that letter, as well as the letter sent by AFSA to Ms. Smith, inquiring about official regulations and policies governing the notification of third parties on the alleged disclosure of classified information. It appears that the PA PDAS wrote to Macmillan about the alleged disclosure but never notified the employee/author of the book of its concerns prior to contacting the publisher.
Ms. Smith had a stint as senior advisor to the Director General of the Foreign Service, so she should know these rules like the back of her hands. We hope to see her response to AFSA on this matter, or over at the Foreign Service Grievance Board or wherever else this case ends up.
